Hawaii Chronicles – Day 12

December 18, 2012

Today reminded me of the quote, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Doc and I set out to North Shore with an itinerary that consisted of viewing the sea turtles, hiking to Waimea falls, going to the beach to soak up some sun, and eating dinner at the Poke Stop. All that got derailed thanks to our dear friend RAIN.

On our drive up to the North Shore it was rainbow paradise! During our 45 minute drive there was constantly a rainbow in the sky. In Haleiwa we pulled over and took some pictures of all the pretty colors in the sky.

Next we went to go catch a glimpse of the Sea Turtles at Turtle Beach in Laniakea at North Shore. We were not so lucky because there were no turtles on the beach. We were able to view them in the water & occasionally they would poke their heads out. There was a lady who worked for an organization – not sure of the name – that gave some information about the sea turtles and suggested that we stand back to allow the sea turtles to have a way to enter the beach. However we were not lucky to see any turtles on the beach today – maybe next time.

We drove toward Waimea Falls to start our hike however it started raining. The information desk mentioned that since it has not rained in a while there was no water at the falls. But he was hopeful that the rain from today would be beneficial. He suggested that we save our money and not a pay an admission fee twice [because we plan on going back with Mama & Lil Bro when they come] since there was no water. He was very kind in telling us that at the gift shop they had admission tickets as stocking stuffers which you could purchase for $5 – regular admissions is $15. Thanks to him we saved over $50!! I LOVE employees that give insider info to guests – thanks awesome guy at Waimea Falls!!

It continued to rain at North Shore therefore we did not go to the beach. We decided to head back to the apartment. I zonked out and had a siesta while Doc caught up with some computer work.

Tomorrow is a big day for us and we are prepping for our adventure!! We have a jam packed day of activities & I can’t wait to share all the things we do!

Hawaii Chronicles – Day 11

December 17, 2012

Today Doc & I started the day in Kailua with breakfast at Crepes No Ka ‘Oi. We ordered one savory and one sweet crepes. For the savory crepes we got The Godfather which was melted mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, fresh basil, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was delicious! It basically tasted like a caprese salad – which we are both obsessed with. For the sweet crepes we ordered Stephanie’s Hula Dance. It was filled with coconut syrup, crushed macadamia nuts, topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar. We got the whipped cream on the side because Doc doesn’t do whip cream – but I do because I eat like a child.

Hawaii Chronicles – Day 10

December 17, 2012

Today was a rather uneventful day. Doc worked another 12 hour shift therefore it was just me, myself, & I for the day.

Doc gave me a to do list that had to be completed by the time she got home. I love my sister very much but at the same time I am deathly afraid of her. I don’t know how but she managed to instill a level of fear in me – but she did. I spent majority of the morning checking things of the to do list. Then I headed to the Nimitz Beach to do some studying for my GRE exam. Studying for a standardized is generally painful but studying for a standardized exam on the beach with the view I had was not so bad. If I lived near a beach I would constantly study there – it is so relaxing and I get a lot done!!! Maybe I should apply to grad schools on the West Coast!

Doc is off for the next three days and we have many adventures planned!!

Hawaii Chronicles – Day 9

December 15, 2012

The highlight of today was the Billabong Pipe Masters. Today Doc was working a 12 hour shift [yikes] therefore I was all by my lonesome self. I was able to do some laundry, clean the apartment, and catch up on some things. The Pipe Masters competition was back on today and I was streaming it online. They were flying through all the heats and quarterfinals began. The sport announcers predicted that the competition was going to end today. Therefore I dropped everything, got in the car, and drove to North Shore hoping to make it to the finals round.

It took me about 50 minutes to get to North Shore. I barely made it to the finals round but when I got there the winner was being announced. Joel Parkinson of Australia won the Billabong Pipe Masters and subsequently crowned 2012 ASP World Title. I was rooting for Kelly Slater – who made it to the semifinals but lost to Josh Kerr. Joel & Josh made it to the finals and after an intense heat Joel Parkinson won. I stayed for the award ceremony afterward – majority of the spectators left which meant the shortie that I am was able to get very close to the stage and snap some awesome pictures.

Hawaii Chronicles – Day 8

December 14, 2012

The morning started at Pearl Harbor. We booked a tour for the USS Arizona. ***Travel Note – the USS Arizona tour tickets are free however you can reserve them online for a $1.50 convenience fee. Another heads up for visitors of Pearl Harbor – you are not allowed to bring any bags with you – you can carry your phone/camera/wallet etc with you but they do not allow you to bring any bags to be brought in. There are storage units that you can pay for and store your belongings or you can leave your stuff in the car.*** The tour began with a half hour video about the history of the Pearl Harbor attack & the USS Arizona. After the video we boarded a boat that took us to the USS Arizona Memorial site. Once on site we had 15 minutes to walk around and view the memorial. It was a somber experience and everyone was quite, soft spoken, and very respectful. Visitors can see the sunken ship as well as all the coral life. Once our time was up we got back on the boat and headed back to the harbor.

Hawaii Chronicles – Day 7

December 13, 2012

This morning I took Bestie to the Swamp Meet & Marketplace at Aloha Stadium in order for her to get her shop on. We were only there for an hour and a half because we had to head to Shagri La for our 10:30am tour. Despite being short on time Bestie was able to do lots of shopping! She found some awesome souvenirs, soaps, local Hawaiian made jams and jewelry. We both got matching Plumeria rings – it’s a little tradition we started to remember the trips we go on together [we just need to get Doc a ring].
