Discovering Scotland in 9 Days: A Two-Part Guide to the Highlands and Edinburgh

December 8, 2024

The Scottish Highlands captivated us with their rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and unique experiences. This guide covers the first part of our Scotland adventure, taking you through Aberdeen, Inverness, and Stirling with daily activities for each stop along the way. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll cover the magic of Edinburgh, including iconic sights and hidden gems for a 4-night itinerary!

Day 1: Arrival in Scotland and Checking Into Aberdeen

Flight and Arrival We began our adventure with a nonstop flight from Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Edinburgh (EDI) on United Airlines. After landing, we rented a car and made our way to Aberdeen. Stay at Holiday Inn Aberdeen West We chose the Holiday Inn Aberdeen West for its excellent location and ample parking. This hotel is conveniently located near Lasan Westhill, an amazing Indian restaurant offering halal options—a perfect spot for a meal after a long travel day.

Day 2: Craigievar Castle, Stonehaven, and Farm Stop

Craigievar Castle
Our first full day started with a visit to Craigievar Castle, known as the “Pink Castle.” We arrived early to explore the grounds at sunrise, capturing stunning photos of this fairytale-like castle.

Lunch in Stonehaven and Fish & Chips at The Bay
After our morning castle visit, we stopped in the seaside town of Stonehaven for lunch at The Bay Fish & Chips—a must-try spot for crispy, fresh fish by the water. Note: there is no inside seating therefore based on weather you can eat outside or in our case since it was raining, ate in the car!

Farm Stop
This family-friendly farm was a highlight of our day! Meeting Scottish farm animals, including the adorable sheep Kit Kat and Kinder, was a memorable experience.

Evening in Aberdeen
We returned to Aberdeen to stroll around town and enjoy the local sights before turning in for the night.

Day 3: Castle Fraser, Huntly Castle, and Drive to Inverness

Castle Fraser and Huntly Castle
Our third day began with two beautiful castles:

  • Castle Fraser: A peaceful morning walk around this tower house castle made for a perfect start.
  • Huntly Castle: One of the oldest structures in the region, with history dating back to the 12th century.

Lunch in Elgin at Drouthy Cobbler
We stopped in Elgin for lunch at Drouthy Cobbler, a charming eatery with a few halal-friendly options.

Afternoon at Clava Cairns
We made a quick stop at Clava Cairns, an ancient site with standing stones and cairns, perfect for history lovers and Outlander fans alike.

Evening in Inverness
After checking into our Inverness hotel, we took an evening stroll around town and enjoyed dinner at Scotch & Rye.

Day 4: Eilean Donan and Dunrobin Castle

Eilean Donan Castle
A visit to Eilean Donan Castle was a must on this day. Note that tickets are only available on-site, and the bridge to the castle opens only when ticket sales begin.

Lunch at Eilean Donan Café
After exploring the castle, we had a cozy lunch at the Eilean Donan Café on the grounds. Grabbed some snacks for the long drive over to the next castle.

Dunrobin Castle and Gardens
In the afternoon, we visited Dunrobin Castle, where French-inspired architecture meets beautiful gardens. A tea break in the castle’s tearoom was a delightful way to relax.

Evening in Inverness
Back in Inverness, we dined at Mustard Seed, where we were pleased to find some halal options for dinner.

Day 6: Doune Castle, Falkland, and Journey to Edinburgh

Our final day in the Highlands was filled with Outlander filming locations.

Doune Castle and Highland Cow Surprise
We headed to Doune Castle, but not before taking an accidental detour that led us to a field of Highland cows, making for an unplanned but delightful photo op!

Lunch in Falkland at Covenanter Hotel
We stopped in Falkland (fictional Inverness in Outlander) and enjoyed lunch at The Covenanter Hotel.

Drive to Edinburgh
We wrapped up our Highlands adventure and headed off to Edinburgh, where we would spend the next four nights.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this guide, where I’ll share all my favorite spots in Edinburgh!

Paris Fall Fashion Diary

September 1, 2022

Bonjour! Sharing all my looks from my recent trip to Paris.

This trip to Paris is especially exciting since it was my first time traveling to Paris during Fall. I was in Paris at the end of August/beginning of September. During my trip the weather ranged from mid 50s to mid 70s. I was overjoyed to bring on all the layers, trench coats, and beret styles. Additionally I picked up a few pieces while I was in Paris – a Sandro navy blazer, Carel slingback, and a Polene handbag. I styled these pieces constant during my trip and have been wearing them non-stop since I have been back since they are classic closet staples.

Hope you enjoy all the looks and be sure to check out my Instagram highlights to see everything I saw, ate, and did in Paris!
