After an unforgettable road trip through the Scottish Highlands (see Part 1 here), we wrapped up our Scotland adventure with four nights in Edinburgh—a city rich in history, charm, and Outlander-worthy streets. From exploring iconic landmarks to uncovering hidden gems, this itinerary covers everything you need for an incredible stay in Scotland’s capital.
Where We Stayed: Kimpton Charlotte Square
For our time in Edinburgh, we checked into Kimpton Charlotte Square, a stylish boutique hotel located in the heart of the city. Its central location made it easy to explore on foot, and the cozy yet elegant decor provided the perfect retreat after long days of sightseeing. Bonus: Baba, the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant, served up an incredible dinner on our first night—definitely worth dining in if you stay here!
Day 1: Arrival & Exploring the Royal Mile
After checking into the hotel, we wasted no time and walked over to the Royal Mile, one of Edinburgh’s most famous streets. This historic stretch, running from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, is lined with charming shops, street performers, and historic closes (narrow alleyways). We spent the afternoon soaking in the city’s old-world charm before heading back to the hotel for dinner at Baba.
Highlights of the Day:
- Walked along the Royal Mile
- Explored local shops & historic closes
- Enjoyed dinner at Baba (at Kimpton Charlotte Square)
Day 2: Outlander Filming Locations & Edinburgh’s Hidden Gems

Morning: Outlander Fans’ Dream Stops
We started the day with a final drive in our rental car to visit Midhope Castle, better known as Lallybroch from Outlander. While visitors can’t go inside, the exterior is instantly recognizable to fans of the show.

From there, we drove to Culross, a well-preserved 17th-century town that was used as the backdrop for Cranesmuir in Outlander. With its cobblestone streets and historic charm, it’s a must-visit whether you’re a fan or not.
Tip: If you plan to visit Outlander filming locations, a rental car is the most convenient way to explore these sites outside the city.

Final Thoughts on Scotland:
Scotland is an unforgettable destination with so much to offer beyond just Edinburgh.
- If you’re short on time, Edinburgh is perfect for a long weekend trip from the east coast.
- However, to truly experience Scotland’s natural beauty, castles, and history, renting a car and exploring the Highlands is highly recommended.
- Whether you’re a history buff, an Outlander fan, or a foodie, Scotland has something for everyone.
